Secure your commercial builder registration

To become a registered builder in New South Wales, you need to apply to NSW Fair Trading. Commercial builders don’t need a specific licence in NSW; instead, you just need a general builders licence and a White Card if you are planning to supervise on construction job sites.

To get licensed in Queensland, you need to apply to the Queensland Building and Construction Commission who handle all applications. You can apply for a range of builder and builder restricted licences, including low rise, medium rise, open, construction project management services, and shopfitting.

In South Australia, you need to submit an application to SA’s Consumer and Business Services. building work contractor licence and a building work supervisor’s registration at the same time - this will allow you to carry out work in construction, trade, site preparation, and more, as well as make sure that all building/construction work meets the necessary standards.

If you are involved in construction management as the nominated supervisor or on a contractor licence in South Australia, consumers will be able to check your credentials to see if you are licensed to carry out work in the state. They can also use this system to find registered commercial builders in their area which can open up work opportunities for you if you are licensed.

If you want to work as a builder in Tasmania, you will need to apply via Consumer, Building and Occupational Services. The Builder (General Construction) licence is broken down into commercial sub-classes of low-rise, medium-rise, and open which specify the scope of work you are able to undertake on that licence.

In Western Australia, there are two primary licence types to choose from:

• Licensed Building Practitioner - individuals with this licence can be nominated supervisors for registered building contractors.
• Licensed Building Contractor - you or your company can carry out services for the builder you work for or hire as a contractor.

You will need to apply via WA’s Department of Energy, Mines, Industry Regulation & Safety. As a Licensed Building Contractor, you will be able to work on a range of construction projects valued at $20,000+.
