Why you need to be a licensed builder in NSW

Licensed builders registered in NSW can legally carry out residential building work that falls within their specific licence class. Those without valid licences may face hefty penalties, including fines of up to $22,000 for individuals.

According to NSW Fair Trading, you must obtain a building licence if you plan to carry out any residential building work, such as construction, repairs, renovations, or decorating, valued at $5,000+ (inc. GST) in labour and materials.

Key facts

  • Those with general building licences can carry out anything classed as residential building work
  • You must meet the criteria, including qualifications and experience before you can apply
  • You can apply for a one, three or five-year licence

I can't thank Builder's Registration and in particular Chris enough. The training and help I received made me feel confident and made the DB-U application process feel like a breeze. Without their help, I highly doubt I would be sitting here now with my DB-U licence.
